The Story
We interact with the frontline every day — in the places where we shop, eat, stay, and receive care. They’re the people who make every customer experience possible. But how often do we stop to think about what it really takes for them to do their best work?
Most workplaces are designed for people who sit at desks. Systems, tools, and processes reflect corporate needs, not the realities of the frontline — fast-paced, high-pressure, constantly changing environments where employees have little time and even less access to information.
The Frontline Enablement Playbook is a practical guide to redesigning work to fit the deskless workforce. Drawing on decades of experience in operations, training, and technology, author JD Dillon shows you how to architect an enablement ecosystem and foster a connected, capable, motivated frontline team.
The playbook helps HR, L&D, and Operations professionals:
- Understand the true needs, motivations, and everyday realities of the frontline
- Shift from learning to readiness, focusing on what people actually need to succeed on the job.
- Strengthen collaboration across L&D, HR, and Operations to solve real business challenges.
- Apply technology and AI to provide support at scale — without losing the human connection.
- Rethink manager enablement practices to boost consistency, engagement, and community.
-
Unlock career opportunities that motivate frontline employees to stay and grow.
The Frontline Enablement Playbook provides you with the insights, tools, and guidance to build an organization that works for everyone. Investing in your frontline isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s a smart business decision. When employees are equipped to perform, grow, and thrive, results follow.

The frontline teaches humility, empathy, and respect. That's where real leadership begins.
The contributors
To tell a truly representative story of the frontline experience, I reached out to the global professional community — bringing together insights from more than 50 contributors across industries, roles, and regions.
Our story features insights from frontline employees, managers, executives, technologists, and learning professionals who live this work every day. Their contributions reflect a shared commitment to helping people do their best work — whether on the sales floor, in a warehouse, behind a counter, or in a hospital corridor.
The frontline is the bottom line. Everything a company does is ultimately reflected in what happens on the frontline.
The (in)visible Workforce
The Frontline Enablement Playbook is more than a collection of words. It's an opportunity to elevate the frontline conversation. Throughout 2026, I'll be sharing frontline stories through keynotes, articles, livestreams, and community events — shining a light on the experiences and challenges of the (in)visible workforce.
Each story reminds us that meaningful change begins with listening to the people we rely on to move our organizations and communities forward.

Every great brand experience starts with an employee who feels equipped to deliver it.
Elevating the frontline conversation
I'm taking The Frontline Enablement Playbook on the road — sharing the stories, insights, and strategies to empower the future of the deskless workforce.
Through live events, webinars, workshops, and podcasts, I'll explore what it really takes to help frontline employees do their best work every shift — and why enabling the people closest to the work is the key to business success.
Join an upcoming session to be part of the global conversation about how organizations can better appreciate, develop, and support their frontline teams.

If we're serious about economic mobility, we have to start where most people start - on the frontline.

No job, no matter how lowly, is truly "unskilled." It takes knowledge, experience, and often considerable physical and emotional effort to survive in those jobs.
